What's Going On With Some Major District Projects?
ALA WAI BRIDGE PROJECT (ALA PONO)
Construction is soon to begin on a pedestrian bridge, measuring 18-stories high, across the Ala Wai Canal (aligning with Kalaimoku St on its makai side and University Ave on its mauka side). The project is currently undergoing a final environmental assessment prior to moving on to the design-build phase. It is currently estimated to cost $63 million with work projected to start as soon as early next year.
SOUTH SHORE SAND & WALKWAY RESTORATION
With numerous aspects of our world-famous shoreline in severe disrepair, efforts are underway to restore our beaches and improve access along our south shore. Top priority projects include the area fronting the Halekulani Hotel (as pictured) and the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. While funding, Environmental Impact Statements, and proposals are all still in flux, our dire needs are forcing plans to come together sooner rather than later. ALA WAI FLOOD RISK MANAGEMENT PROJECT
You have likely heard about plans by the Army Corps of Engineers to erect walls up to 6ft high along the Ala Wai, Manoa, & Palolo canals and raise sidewalks to protect against flood risk. At last count, the project was slated to cost over $1 billion and drastically change the landscape of our neighborhood. Well, a court ruling on another flood project along the Missouri River has created massive potential cost liabilities for damages caused to surrounding properties during flood events, resulting in our project, for the time being, getting more or less scrapped.
