Latest Community Updates

Aloha!

A lot is going on in our community and I want to help keep you informed! In this email you will find an update on our condo insurance crisis, a list of major events in our neighborhood happening through the end of the year, a status report on a key shoreline walkway, and important information regarding the upcoming election.

Mahalo,

Jillian Anderson

An Update on our Condo Insurance Crisis

As I shared in a previous email, on August 7 high condominium insurance premiums were declared an emergency by Governor Green.

As a result of the emergency proclamation as well as from suggestions of an Executive-Legislative task force, the Hawaii Hurricane Relief Fund (HHRF) created after insurers left the market following Hurricane Iniki will be restarted as an alternative insurance option for condos to secure at a potentially lower rate.

The Hawaii Hurricane Relief Fund currently has a sum of $170 million to go towards this new venture.

Though, the bad news it is estimated to take months to re-establish as per our State Insurance Commissioner, this is “like starting an insurance company from scratch.”

 Addressing Safety Concerns
In Front of the Halekulani Hotel

For those of you who have traversed our beautiful south shoreline from the Outrigger to the Halekulani Hotel in the last few years, you will know that it is no easy feat. The elevated walkway has been left to severely erode, creating dangerous conditions. Finally, the Halekulani Hotel has put up “no entry” signs and has blocked both entrances to the walkway that fronts their hotel following repeated public notice.

Though, for those of us who use this route, it might be a while until we see repairs. There is currently dispute between the Department of Land and Natural Resources and the Halekulani Hotel about who is responsible for repairing the seawall. Following an inspection of the wall’s structural integrity, it has been recommended that a complete replacement of the wall is the best option given the extent of the damage.

I personally find it unacceptable that this key walkway and gem of our south shoreline went neglected for so long and that significant liability was allowed to be undertaken for years. Despite this, we still find ourselves without a clear path forward and in all likelihood years ahead of us dealing with what is an inconvenience, eyesore, and embarrassment for our community.

As your Representative, I would do all I can to expedite the full repairs to this walkway, that fronting the Sheraton which has also been out of commission for years on end, and for the many other severely neglected elements of what should be well-maintained coastline access routes for tourists and residents alike.

The Election is Nearly Upon Us!

By this week Friday, October 18 you will receive your ballot in the mail!

In this August’s Primary Election, less than 30% of those of you in Waikiki cast a vote! If you are concerned by any of the issues raised in this email, those I have sent in the past, or other problems in our community you encounter on a daily basis, the only way to get the change you are seeking is to (1) VOTE! and (2) select the candidate you think understands the issues and has what it takes to solve them.
